Well I must have been really out of it or some thing and in the plat section I tryed to put 500 in. Having only 1k on they character it would put 000 instead of 500 in. So I'm sitting there like WTF is going on and the runner is getting pissed... so I pay him the 1k and go about my business, only to realize about 20 mins latter I was trying to give him 500plat instead of 500 gold -_- Yes I fail.

Too bad you cant put 500k in the trader window lol

It's really hard to get scammed. Out of my 2 years of playing, I've only been scammed once - I was gettin tired of trying to sell a Stonereaper staff (back when it was 60k+) and some guy put 700g instead of 70k. I just wanted to get rid of it already so I didn't notice. That was over a year ago and never been scammed since then.

Any weird behavior or stupid requests such as them asking you to go outside should be an obvious sign that they're upto something. The increase of scammers doesn't really bother me - if you're just a little careful and not an idiot you should be fine.

I'm not an idiot. Maybe a bit naive when it comes to the common scams of the game, but definitely not an idiot. I don't sell much in game because it is such a stupid system. Why they don't have an auction hall or something akin to guru auctions is beyond me.

And ANet responded to my report and told me that the player was banned for violation of the rules, so your assessment that they didn't do anything wrong is, well, wrong. I still lost my mini, but at least I learned something.

If the victim hasn't heard of anything like that (don't visit fan sites, or new scam), plus if the scammer is extremely friendly and nice, there is a slightly higher chance that the victim might fall for it.

Though there isn't an excuse for someone to fall for an old trick. But come on, there are people who return to GW after 1yr+ and you don't expect them to chance upon this or similar threads, even if they do visit forums.

I've only ever fallen for one scam, back in Pre when i first started playing, i got a black dye for my second or third dye drop, and some guy convinced me that 150g was a good deal for it. Of course, i believed him, especially seeing as Merch was only paying 1g for it!

Other than that, i have been targeted a few times with attempting to swap platinum for gold, and one person actually tried passing off a grey dye as silver.

In all MMO's there are people who are to lazy to make there own gold and prey off people. People like this are all around. Just remeber if they tell you an offer way higher always double check trades. And never drop an item outside of a city. I have heard story's of people zoning everlasting tonics.

Personally I think scammers are really stupid. The scammers nowadays are just plain dumb.

I saw a pair of them this morning in Kamadan. (Names are close but not exact)
Master Da: WTS TEROB'S WAND!!!! ONLY 50K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Vala Noob: WTB TEROB'S WAND!!!! 100K!!!! WHISPER ME!!!! TRADE FAST!!!!!

The problem is that both of them were spamming their scams at the rate of about once per second so that the only thing you saw in trade chat was Terob's wand offers. Kinda pathetic if that's the only way they can make money.

Only scam I fell for was getting a Frozen Ecto instead of a real one... On the other hand it was one of the brats that give you 5 blue weapons, some dye and 500g if you say it's worth 5K. So it could be that he was clueless about real ecto... Then again, my fault for not paying attention
